A Manor to Rue In
After the stock market crash costs him his career, former banker and Great War veteran Thomas Harrow accepts an assignment to settle the estate of the recently deceased owner of Blackwood Manor.
It should be simple work.
It isn't.
"He crossed the threshold and walked to the desk, resting his hand on the journal. The leather cover felt warm, as though it had been held recently. Impossible. He cautiously opened it, concerned about what he might find. The note from earlier was there—Rain today. Accounts balanced—but below, where he could have sworn was blank, began to show scattered, half-legible names and wartime sketches that he didn’t remember drawing. One phrase stood out, underlined twice in the margin: It watches in the silence. With it was a drawing of the outstretched hand.
Thomas stared at the words and felt the chill on his arm again. He cautiously looked down to make sure no hands were grasping at him from the shadows. He returned his focus to the journal and closed it slowly, as if he expected it to react. “Just lack of sleep,” he muttered, then tucked the journal under his arm and went to cross the threshold again."
